To Earth and Back

Arthur Woods / 16-01-2018

Resident artist Arthur Woods reports on his recent visit to Earth where he attended a technical briefing at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria. The purpose of the meeting was to learn more details about the Orbital Space Mission on the Dream Chaser spacecraft proposed by the UNOOSA in a cooperation with Sierra Nevada Corporation. The mission and a Call for Interest was announced this past September at the International Astronautical Congress. It is designed to enable the orbital spaceflight of 25-30 payloads - especially those from developing countries - which relate to one or more of the UN's 17 Sustainable Goals. An Announcement of Opportunity will be issued later this year and the payloads will be selected in 2019 for the planned flight in the year 2022. After a week back on Earth Arthur was launched to the Greater Earth space station on-board the 'Destiny' spaceplane atop a Sagan 3 rocket launcher.
